The Red Planet

(This was published in 3rd June 2007 Sunday edition of Deccan Herald. Online version is at:

)

Reclined lazily on her side,
gazing at the verdant around,
Feeling the warmth seeping inside.
Suddenly, out of the blue,
come the armies slicing through
the silent calm, rushing to claim,
Her land, dark gold and gains.
Before she could shout, ‘Look out…”
trampling feet finds her mouth,
cutting her cry short.
That cry drowned in mindless and fury,
Instead, wells up in her eyes.
With their spoils, they have left in hurry,
The green in them and around in atrophy.
She tastes the blood salty,
From that deep wound,
and the scarring all around
that will take a long time to heal.
The blood and tears stifle,
The warm embers; The hope in her fades.
The ugly red spots in the crushed glades,
Mirrors mutilation, she has over eons seen.
She forgets yet another wracking pain,
gathers herself, tending to bloody liens
wonders, “Will I ever be green again?”

been a while since someone wrote on the environment.. although the effects are more perceptible now... guess another apocalyse is on the anvil if mankind refuses to wake up to nature's warning calls...

But i feel, ur poem is also about the war and the mindless destruction happening in today's world... but not sure if thats exactly what ye meant..

as an aside, m in for that media watch blog now. Got pissed to no ordinary extent by the media coverage of the ash-abhi engagement... maniacal reporting...

4ww: some other day, perhaps.

4Sol: Yep, I had actually named the poem 'war' first and then changed it to "Red Planet".
Re Mediawatch blog, I've created one now at media-watchers.blogspot.com. I've invited one other person to be the co-admin,author,ranter on the blog; drop me a note, i'll send the invite to you too.

4Sol: The way blogspot works is that I need to send an invite to an email Id to make you a co-author. So you need to drop me an email note :)

Was a good day to read this as today is world environment day

I definitely hope she will be green again - makes me really introspect that the answer to that must lie within me.
